What are the benefits of meditation for seniors? Much the same as for younger folk. Meditators of all ages rely on their practice to help them develop a more peaceful, workable mind; an improved ability to concentrate and remain focused; a better understanding of how to work with emotions; and a range of other benefits as well, ranging from the physical to the psychological to the spiritual. For older meditators especially, honing the ability to focus and remain present is a precious tool that can be helpful in everyday life. Mindfulness meditation in particular has also been found to boost immune systems and improve the ability to manage chronic illness and pain.
Beyond health benefits, another reason why seniors and meditation are a good fit is because as they age, many people find it easier to let go of the busy-ness and preoccupations that seemed so important when they were younger. In meditation, letting go of distractions and maintaining awareness of, say, the comings and goings of the breath go hand-in-hand and lead to a more peaceful, contented mind.
